Moth emerges

While working in the backyard, a flash of color caught my attention. Its stubby wings and fat abdomen threw me off, but I recognized that pattern -- giant leopard moth Hypercompe scribonia.

It climbed to the highest point it could find, then settled in to inflate its wings.

A few hours later, it was done, ready to take flight.
