Yard long beans fruit

The yard long beans are beginning to fruit, and true to their name, the bean pod is long! I picked some that were about 2 feet long, but the hulls were already too tough to eat as green beans. The long bean's violet flower resembles an orchid, and soon a pair of pods begin to form.

The bean pods have a slight curve and can grow into a curling spiral. These pods are about 10 inches long.

About 18 inches is about as long as they should grow before harvest as green beans, otherwise the hulls become too fibrous.
